Precise design, extraordinary build
Compay was founded by two brothers: Balthasar (1848-1896, mechanic) and Philipp Helfmann (1843-1899, mason). In 1872 Philipp Helfmann moved to the Bornheim district of Frankfurt to start up in business as a lumber merchant, then as a building contractor.
His brother Balthasar followed him in 1873, shortly before the ‘Gründerkrise’, the economic crisis after foundation of the German Reich, started. In 1874 the Bornheim address book first recorded the firm as “Helfmann Brothers”.

The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills, on the existing Beverly Hilton Hotel property, evokes classic Hollywood glamour informed by California’s Streamline Moderne style with meticulously executed interior architecture and decor designed by Pierre-Yves Rochon and an exterior of sweeping white stone curves, floor-to-ceiling glass and bronze accents. 170 luxury rooms, including 42 suites, feature oversized balconies and classic lanais that extend the interior living space outward. MATT concurrently renovated a new wing for the Beverly Hilton while the hotel remained open and operational. Challenges included a dynamic design environment associated with the fast-track nature of the project, phased demolition to accommodate the Hilton’s temporary need to continue using certain structures slated for removal, building out to the property line at this exceptionally busy intersection in the heart of Beverly Hills and ensuring safe, continuous operation of the Beverly Hilton directly adjacent, so that it could continue hosting such signature events as the Golden Globe Awards.
